Given the fragile institutional situation and the seriousness of human rights violations in Colombia, a group of 650 organizations, including Dejusticia, made a joint call to the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) asking to energetically condemn the acts of violence and repression of social protest in Colombia and to visit the country to verify the seriousness of the human rights violations.
We also consider it is essential that the IACHR establish an independent mechanism in the field to collaborate with the national authorities in the investigation, which can help clarify what happened, overcome impunity for these serious events, and recommend measures that contribute to the failure to repetition of the same.
Finally, we call on all actors and society in general to defend the right to protest, to strongly condemn the disproportionate violence with which the public force acts in the framework of social protests in Colombia and to demand the pertinent reforms demanded by the population so that the current scenario of repression does not repeat itself.
